House Lionsbane

» by TitusBrand » 21st Feb 2017, 12:34 pm

Image

Seat of power: Vanorshold
Jarldom of Vanorshold: Richard Lionsbane
Jarldom of Zhelensk: Theodore Lionsbane (NPC)
Jarldom of Faerdam: Isabeau Lionsbane

Banner: Red surf on a black banner. The red surf symbolizes the burning sea from when the family founder set the channel on fire to destroy a fleet of pirate ships.

House Words: ’By Our Leave.’ For generations The Lionsbane have sat as the bulwark that protects most of greater Borys from external threats. Their position near Solitania has meant they face the bulk of the undead threat from that frozen hellscape, and their positioning in the Smoky Sea means they are the first line of defense against naval threats. Travel within these territories are carefully watched, and none may sail their waters without their leave. Those that try will be burnt alive and dumped into the sea.

Bloodline: The Lionsbane family have had royal blood in their veins since before they took their name. Their founder, Vanor, was the seventh son of the fourth child in line to the Rugnosian throne before moving to Borys as a child. He married a daughter of Borysian Petty King Royalty after claiming his title. Although the Lionsbane have never come close to inheriting the Rugnosian throne (currently sitting around 380th in the line of succession), and although the Borysian royal line of Petty Kings is now defunct, they still wear the pride of their royal blood well.

History
  • 435 KD - A Lion Valari from Kalimasj strikes out to ‘claim the sea’ for his lover, forming a fleet of twelve pirate ships called The Pride
  • 444 KD - After nearly a decade of raiding Sauria and Rugnos shipping lines and torching naval yards, The Lion sends his pride north to try and break Borys, establishing a base on Castald Island.
  • 444 KD - The pride sails down the gulf between Havelheim and Tharaheim in the dead of night. A man named Vanor saw them coming and filled the channel with a hundred of barrels of oil. As the pride passed the oil was set on fire and raider ships were rammed into their hulls. The pride was sunk in under an hour. Vanor presented The Lion’s head to the Petty King of Tharaheim, who named him The Lion’s Bane.
  • 448 KD - The Petty King of Tharaheim dies without a male heir. Vanor takes Lionsbane as his new family name and marries the Petty King’s daughter, becoming Petty King of Tharaheim.
  • 584 KD -Zhelensk Lionsbane heads east to deal with an increase of undead from Solitania, building a large keep and a core of warriors to fight off the threat.
  • 2650 KD - The petty kings are abolished, the Lionsbanes transfer to being Ealdormen.
  • 2654 KD - The head of the Lionsbane dies without a worthy heir and the Sörenvar family seize the position of Ealdorman, which they successfully hold to this day.
  • 2665 KD - With the help of the new tidetouched, the Lionsbane create The Gulf of Zhelensk, breaking the thin land bridge that connected Solitania to the eastern point of Tharaheim. The undead threat is dramatically reduced.
  • 2705 KD - Isabeau Lionsbane is born
  • 2723 KD - Sigmund Lionsbane is born
  • 2729 KD - Richard Lionsbane is born
  • 2754 KD - Edward Lionsbane dies, Richard Lionsbane becomes Family head and Jarl of Vanorshold.

Reputation, Alliances and Affiliations
Reputation
  • Ever since their founder the Lionsbane family have spent countless generations cultivating a reputation as fierce leaders, stalwart tacticians, and ruthless warriors. Despite their fall from power after the transition from the system of Petty Kings to Ealdormen, they still rule the western, southern and eastern ends of Tharaheim with an iron fist, and have lost little of their sway. Their name holds weight in the entirety of Borys, and is at least recognizable to most of the educated in Northern Rugnos.

List of Allies and Adversaries

Index
Blue indicates a strong alliance
Green indicates mutually profitable arrangements or a one-sided appreciation, more neutral than anything else
Red indicates a heated rivalry

  • The Ironswift Clan (link) | One of the few meaningful connections forged by Edward Lionsbane, the alliance with the Ironswift is one built off mutually-beneficial trade. Edward forged a strong trade route through Drof Mitir between multiple large businesses in the greater Mevenua area and the Ironswift holdings, making them both a large amount of gold. The families have met on occasion, and things seem primed for the clans to grow even closer.
  • The Aleforge Clan | One of the few meaningful connections forged by Edward Lionsbane, the alliance with the Aleforge is one built off trade. The Aleforge family have provided several high-scale contracts towards the family, and the Lionsbane have arranged trade deals to secure a way for the clan to obtain some rarer materials easily.
  • The Consortium | Richard Lionsbane’s multiple business dealings with members of the Consortium over the years have put the family’s name on their map as potential business partners and allies for this organization.
  • The Sörenvar family | Although the Lionsbane have been nothing but cordial and civil to the Sörenvar family in public, even voting for members of their family in Ealdormen elections they had no hope of winning themselves, they have despised this family for generations. It is a hatred that was sparked when the Sörenvar stole control of their ancestral home during the transition from Petty Kings to Ealdormen, and it is one that will not stop until the Sörenvar family are dead.

Hey Titusbrand,

We've briefly discussed this lore in the past, but now that it's been submitted and fully reviewed, there are a couple of points I need to bring up:

  • The idea of a land bridge between Solitania and Tharaheim and the subsequent creation of the Gulf of Zhelensk isn't plausible. The amount of effort it would take to remove it, particularly with the use of Tidetouched, is immense. You would need to move millions of tons of dirt, stone, and ice, and not only are Tidetouched rare, but Tidetouched who even come within a far cry of that level of power are even rarer. Plus, there's no basis for its existence in site canon, so if that was to be approved it would need to be approved as an event in canon lore.
I would suggest giving Tharaheim its own undead problem, perhaps from undead that ended up in Tharaheim in the wake of the Dead War and have lurked in Tharaheim ever since. This would mean House Lionsbane would not be facing the bulk of the undead from Solitania, but would be a valid solution to apply to Tharaheim. Otherwise, Solitania remains largely unclaimed.
  • If you do choose to keep the "fighters of the undead" motif in the House Lionsbane lore, it'll need to get scaled back a bit. "Held off the undead threat for generations without a single point of failure" is a bit extreme of a success rate. Realistically, the undead are going to win sometimes.
  • In a similar vein, the idea that House Lionsbane is the first line of naval defense for Borys isn't accurate to the geography. Havelheim would be the first island an invader would reach coming from the west, and the western coast of Vardendrak is also largely exposed to the sea. In addition, if House Lionsbane is going to claim waters to be under their absolute control, said waters would need to be limited to the coastlines of Tharaheim nearest to the holds that the House Lionsbane members rule. Additional authority and influence in further seas would not only conflict with existing RP, but also exceed the limits of personal lore.
  • While the map may not make it very clear, the Smoky Sea is the name of the waters that surround the map, not the name of the sea to the west of Borys.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave them here.

@Kayenta Moenkopi

I'm all for continuing the approval process for this submission; because its directly tied to your character we could definitely switch ownership over to you.

Go ahead and make the edits requested above, and after you're done you can post the updated submission right here in this thread (this is for record keeping purposes, once the lore becomes finalized we can put it in your name so you can continue updating it as needed).

Thank you. Ownership is a strong word though, but I understand that is for future editing capability. I would rather share the submission, my part is so minor it isn't funny, rather than be 'credited ownership', if that makes any sense?
I didn't write it.
That would just feel funny to me.

thanks for the edits! I'll start reviewing this soon.
