MAGIC & THE THIRST
The ancient arts of the arcane are slowly dying away... it is as if the earth is running dry and the souls of our world are growing infertile.
THE COMMON BELIEF
Though the people are uncertain as to the link between the decline in magic and the abandoning of the Old Gods, it is evident that the properties of this world are fading away. With the depletion of magic also comes the decline of other elements relying upon it -- weapons are losing their enchantments and cities held together by arcane means are crumbling. The forests seem less magnificent and the skies seem less clear -- there is foul play at work here and the mystery is proving difficult to unveil; children of sorcerers are being born without the ability to conjure fire and races of fey and other elementals are disappearing completely without a trace. People are becoming frightened as their options are limited; those that survived off their abilities of magic are finding themselves at a terrible loss.
A widespread fear is poisoning those fortunate few that still possess their magical powers as an extremist group, calling themselves the "Harvesters", seek and kidnap known persons with powers. It is said that the Harvesters resort to brutal means in their desperate attempts to uncover the mystery and perhaps, preserve what little magic is left in the world in a crusade they call the "Thirst"; those kidnapped are brutally murdered and their bodies are ravaged and their organs are drained -- with the remnants of their hearts, eyes, and blood, the Harvesters undertake foul methods of alchemy and necromancy in order to "retain" the magical properties of their victims. Magical races, such as dragons and satyrs are also hunted and massacred in the same fashion.
The power and numbers of the Harvesters is unknown. Those wise and capable of magic know better than to flaunt their abilities publically, as no one is for certain who is watching -- only in absolutely necessary situations should magic be used... and no one knows for certain when someone's power may run out. These are trying times and magic has become something precious to those who still possess it.
CAN I PLAY A HARVESTER?
Of course! You will have to explain why they're so eager to possess magic (and what lengths that they would go to in order to obtain it). A harvester can be of any race and from any faction, but will most likely have to be chaotic or neutral / evil. Though there are no current "established" organizations of harvesters (such as a guild), it may only be a matter of time as magic begins to wane and fade from our world... You may wish to read the extended lore on Harvesters found here.
SO WHAT LIMITS DO I HAVE?
None, but we ask that you keep it reasonable. There are some races that are purely magical, then there are some that have no capabilities whatsoever. Tur wants to encourage balanced characters so that our members can equally enjoy their experiences here, but you are free to create any kind of character you like (although we have a few basic guidelines). Remember -- a character should have equal weaknesses as they do strengths, and that no one is completely invulnerable. Those that exercise their magical abilities too frequently may potentially lose what power they possess -- as the Thirst is a mystery and the cause unknown, it is impossible to say who will next suffer the consequences. The only restriction we have is magical items and creatures... those you will have to obtain on your adventures in Tur.
